About the SCORE Association

The SCORE Association is the premier free business counseling service found in the United States. For more than 35 years, SCORE's more than 10,000 retired and working business professionals have volunteered to help a new generation of small business owners start and grow their companies. As a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Association (SBA), SCORE operates in cooperation with the SBA to provide business owners with information vital to success, including counsel on financial operations, business planning, marketing strategies, product development, hiring practices, franchising and more.

SCORE provides key services --both face-to-face at 389 office locations across the country or online at www.score.org --to busy entrepreneurs just getting their feet wet, or in need of a seasoned pro as a sounding board for their existing business. Additionally, SCORE offers nearly 6000 local business training workshops each year. SCORE counselors value your privacy, and all counseling is confidential. Business counseling relationships can last just a few sessions, or a number of years based on your needs as an entrepreneur.

 About Chapter 254

SCORE chapter 254 has been serving southern New Jersey --Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem counties -- for more than 25 years. We have 30 volunteers with widely diverse backgrounds and experience covering many business specialties over their business life. This provides a vast base of experience that can be matched to your requirements if you have special needs. We counsel at several locations and offer both morning and evening hours for the convenience of our clients. Where appropriate, our counselors will meet with you at your business location to better understand and advise you. Your success as a small business entrepreneur is our only objective.

A number of our counselors are additionally active as internet counselors and serve clients globally. Counseling started face-to-face can be continued by phone or email when convenient. We provide local seminars and workshops staffed by our own members and professional guest participants. We also work closely with the SBA/Rutgers University Small Business Development Center in Camden for many jointly sponsored activities.

 About Counseling

A counseling session is typically a friendly discussion of your situation with one or two counselors that is directed to helping you to actively address your problems or grasp new opportunities. It often includes discussion of background items that shed light on the business situation, as well as any business plans or financial data that may usefully contribute to the discussion. We are prepared to discuss and consider all issues that affect the ultimate success of the business. The objective of the session is to jointly develop a suggested set of actions that will help you move to the realization of your objectives and the success of your business. Plans for follow-up sessions to review progress and refocus effort may be included where it is jointly felt to be desirable. In many respects the counseling can be thought of as a conversation with a trusted and experienced friend in the business. To schedule a counseling session, please complete the Request for Counseling Form.

About Volunteering

If you have had a career in business, are retired or otherwise available for volunteer service, and would enjoy the satisfaction of mentoring and consulting with entrepreneurs to share your hard-won experience, contact us. A member of our training committee will arrange for an interview and review our process with you. Since few business people are experienced counselors, we provide a short training course, with counseling experience, so that your active counseling will be both productive and rewarding. If you are a woman, a member of a minority, or could counsel in a foreign language, you could help serve the growing diversity of our clients. We need good people of all backgrounds. Join us in an interesting and satisfying service that supports the backbone of American business-- the Small Business Community.
